17 Lessons I Learned in 2017

As 2017 is coming to an end, I realized that this year was a BIG year for me! Between several of my friend's weddings and bachelorette parties, plus my own, to visiting new places, gaining new friendships, moving in with my husband (we didn't live together before we were married), and preparing for my brother's first deployment, I'd say this year has held a lot of "firsts", and it would be silly of me to say that this wasn't an amazing year.

As I reflect on the year, I can't help but be truly thankful for the growth I've had and the lessons I've learned from each hardship and every happy moment, and so today I'll be sharing with you 17 lessons I learned in 2017....see what I did there?!

Maybe for you, some of these lessons are inspirational, while others will get you wrapped up in all the feels because it made you realize what life is really all about. Maybe this list will surprise you, and maybe it won’t. Either way, I bet you learned one or more of these lessons this year or in years past, and if not, welcome back to school - class is now in session!

#1 - Standing out from the crowd by being uniquely you isn’t as hard as most people think it is - all you have to do is BE YOU!

#2 - Fresh air every day makes me feel alive, especially when it includes a bike ride with friends.

#3 - Giving back in ANY way makes me appreciate the things that I already have instead of feeling like I “need” more.

#4 - A lifestyle change doesn't happen over night, and it doesn't have to be a dramatic change like losing 100lbs. It can be as simple as flossing your teeth everyday.

#5 - If you’ve already reached your “dreams”, you didn’t dream big enough.

#6 - Not everyone is going to like you, and that’s okay, because you weren’t created to live for everyone else, you were created to live for our Creator.

#7 - Marriage is dying to self. (I'm still learning this one...)

#8 - Putting your spouse first (before family, friends, job, yourself, etc.) is SO much easier said than done. (Still working on this one, too.)

#9 - I’ve never stood more firmly in what I believe in as far as my faith and morals, and I'm pretty proud of myself for it.

#10 - Being “traditional” or “old-fashioned” may be frowned upon these days, but I don't think it will ever truly go out of style. If it does, then it makes you rare, which is even more valuable than blending in with the rest of the world.

#11 - It's not the size of the wedding that matters, it's what takes place in the marriage that counts.

#12 - When someone confides in you, keep it to yourself, whether they asked you to or not.

#13 - You'll make new friends in various stages of life, but always stay closest with your day ones from Jr. High and High School.

#14 - I am so incredibly grateful for a husband that would give his shirt off of his back not only to me, but also to a stranger in need. (I wish for every girl to find this kind of man.)

#15 - Put your petty differences aside and remember that the big picture in life is to love one another, so don’t waste your time doing the opposite.

#16 - Placing someone else’s need before your own will be more satisfying than taking care of your own needs.

#17 - A positive mindset, consistency, determination, and belief in Christ are game changers in this thing called life.

GEEZ LOUISE! I’m all in the feels now, but I'm so proud to look back and realize that I was able to learn so many valuable lessons from this year!

I hope that some of these lessons tugged at your heart a bit and helped you reflect on the person you currently are. More importantly, I hope these lessons can provide the groundwork for you to become the person you want to be!

So keep on shining, sister! My prayer for you is that you continue to become a better version of yourself every day, and lastly, that the year of 2018 is the year that you begin a life that is BOLD AND BRAVE!

CHEERS TO THE NEW YEAR!!
